General Position Summary

The Sr. Media Relations Professional is the program lead for media relations and external communications for PJM, providing expert recommendations and support for PJM communications. To succeed, a candidate should have passion and energy along with strong organizational skills. This position requires continuous communication with external media contacts. The responsibilities include anticipating and responding to the PJM Member community's media requests. In this role, the Sr. Media Relations Professional would be required to write clear and concise talking points and other external messaging. The right candidate will know media relations locally and nationally, have relationships with reporters and be able to showcase media placements.


The Sr. Media Relations Professional also develops and implements effective communications strategies at the direction of the Chief Communications Officer. This role also supports the Chief Communications Officer and the writing team by writing executive communications (e.g., speeches, talking points, press events, external communications, media relations), newsletter production and/or editing, communications plan development and other strategic communications services aligned with PJM’s mission and goals.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be the program lead for media relations and strategic communications.
  • Ensure that external public communications is crisp and clear. Advocate for PJM with the right audiences.
  • Provide direct strategic support and advice to the Communications leadership team on all issues, needs, programs, and projects related to communications.
  • Create and execute strategic, active and reactive communications strategies.
  • Explore and recommend new communications channels including but, not limited to, social media
  • Coordinate the resources for effective communications. Develop and implement thought leadership strategies.  
  • Create and implement metrics for the effectiveness of communications systems and programs.
  • Support PJM members by providing knowledgeable media insights. 
  • Research, write and edit articles, publications, speeches and collateral designed for various stakeholders.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of the strategic issues the company is addressing and PJM’s position.
  • Execute strategic externally or internally facing communications as assigned.
  • Be proficient in traditional and social media strategies.

Characteristics and Qualifications


  • Bachelors in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or at least 8 years of experience in communications
  • At least 10 years of experience write/edit in a variety of formats, including news releases, executive speeches, brochures, and online media
  • At least 10 years of experience develop and implement comprehensive communications plans
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
  • Ability to visualize and solve complex problems
  • Experience managing projects


  • BS, Communications
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
