General Position Summary

The Manager, Media Relations is the program lead for media relations and external communications for PJM, providing expert recommendations and support for PJM communications. This position requires continuous contact with external media contacts. The responsibilities include anticipating and responding to PJM media requests and overseeing social media. In this role, the Manger, Media Relations would be required to write clear and concise talking points and other external messaging.

 

The Manager, Media Relations also develops and implements effective communications strategies at the direction of the Chief Communications Officer. This role also supports the Chief Communication Officer and the writing team by writing executive communications (e.g., speech writing, talking points, press events, external communications, media relations), production and/or editing, communications plan development and other strategic communications services aligned with PJM’s mission and goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be the program lead for media relations and strategic communications.
  • Ensure that external public communications is crisp and clear. Advocate for PJM with the right audiences.
  • Provide direct strategic support and advice to the Communications Leadership team on all issues, needs, programs, and projects related to communications.
  • Create and execute strategic, active and reactive communications strategies.
  • Explore and recommend new communications channels including but, not limited to social media
  • Coordinate the resources for effective communications. Develop and Implement thought leadership strategies.
  • Create and implement metrics for the effectiveness of communications systems and programs.
  • Support PJM members by providing knowledgeable media insights.
  • Research, write and edit articles, publications, speeches and collateral designed for various stakeholders.
  • Maintain a clear understanding of the strategic issues the company is addressing and PJM’s position.
  • Execute strategic, externally or internally facing communications as assigned.

Characteristics and Qualifications

Required

  • BA, Communications, Journalism or Public Relations
  • 10 years experience in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations
  • At least 10 years of experience write/edit in a variety of formats, including news releases, executive speeches, brochures, and online media
  • At least 10 years of experience develop and implement comprehensive communications plans
  • Experience implementing and developing strategies and plans for communications or public relations


Preferred

  • MBA, Business Administration
  • 5-10 years of leadership experience in a managerial/supervisory role.
  • Ability and desire to build relationships and interact with a wide range of stakeholders and staff to maintain and enhance PJM’s customer service reputation
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
