General Position Summary

The strategic communications professional position is a key role that helps to advance PJM’s strategic business objectives through timely, active and effective communications plans and work products. The position functions as a communications issues writer who focuses on stakeholder and member communications and effective strategic messaging for audiences that include members, the FERC, state regulators, the public, policy-makers and the news media. The position provides key support for and works with external audiences that are critical for PJM. Consistent messaging and collaborative work with State Government Policy, Member Services, Legal and Federal teams are crucial to the success of the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The strategic communications writer will take a strategic approach to communications activities:
  • Focuses on achieving objectives and goals
  • Develops position papers, talking points and collateral on issues impacting PJM
  • Works with Member Services, Stakeholder, State and Member Services, Legal, and Federal teams to maintain consistent messaging and clear communications to achieve PJM’s mission, strategy and goals
  • The individual assists in developing strategies, key messages and vehicles for communication to support specific PJM initiatives and market activities. Good research, writing, editing and political savvy are required. The candidate will collaborate with Communications staff, the Executive Team and the Senior Leadership Team to develop communications with external audiences.
  • The candidate provides strategic and stakeholder communications materials and:
  • Ensures that stakeholders receive timely, clear and useful information
  • Develops and implements tactical plans consistent with the Communications departmental strategy and plan
  • Develops PJM’s strategic messaging in collaboration with member, regulatory and government teams
  • Prepares and assists with briefing materials, including collateral, talking points and presentations and position papers
  • Shapes responses to PJM members on stakeholder issues
  • Collaborates with key leaders throughout the company to ensure a consistent public message
  • Works independently in pursuit of department goals and objectives with little or no specific direction
  • Demonstrates integrity in decision-making
  • Demonstrates persuasion and negotiation skills
  • Maintains knowledge of strategic communications to improve overall efficiency and cost effectiveness
  • Establishes a sense of urgency to complete tasks in an efficient and cost-effective manner

Characteristics and Qualifications


  • BA, Journalism or equivalent work experience English Writing
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a team environment
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Experience using verbal and written communications skills
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS-PowerPoint)


  • MBA, Business Administration
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
  • Experience supporting any of PJM Committees
