  • General Position Summary

    The (Sr./Lead) System Operator Trainer is responsible to support the overall goals of the System Operator Training Department. This includes creating curriculum, content, online training, and delivering programs targeted to PJM system operators based on changing system requirements, markets, ancillary services, business rule changes, or procedural changes. Increasing emphasis is being placed on new technology for capture and delivery of training asynchronously to better fit the needs of shift personnel.

    This position will report to the Manager of System Operator Training. Training will be conducted at either of the PJM RTO Control Centers. This position will require approximately 25% travel to the control center in Milford, PA and some additional travel in support of PJM Seminar, conferences or audits.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Develops Training curricula and content, in support of NERC Standards, to reflect new markets and tools, and to advance the knowledge of PJM System Operating employees.
    • Develops benchmarks and measures the ongoing effectiveness of relevant processes and systems related to the Training function. Accountable to carry out the day to day activities that will enable the organizational resources function to meet the departmental strategic goals.
    • Remains current on the changing business rules and market options.
    • Determine training needs, investigate and select training courses, plan training procedures and coordinate scheduling courses utilizing the Systematic Approach to Training to support PJM System Operators.
    • Develop and maintain a close working relationship with, and solicit input and direction from the Manager, Dispatch, Manager Reliability Engineering, Supervising Dispatchers, and Dispatching personnel to effectively carry out job responsibilities.
    • Develop, coordinate, and conduct position-specific educational programs for all Dispatch Department personnel. Initiate the procurement of training materials and conduct validated position specific testing.
    • Work in tandem with the personnel responsible for the Operator Training Simulator to ensure its consistent, timely and effective use.
    • Participate in projects for the enhancement and development of the Operator Training Simulator, as required.
    • Participate in strategic design, development, and evaluation of scenarios for simulator exercises.
    • Provide classroom instruction, which includes development, design and continual assessment of lesson plans.
    • Update training materials as necessary.
    • Plan, prepare and disseminate information concerning the organization through audio and visual communication media. Develop scripts and assist in the production of videos or multimedia products.
    • Maintain a professional structured class environment according to established policies and procedures.
    • Develop pre-training materials for all class participants.
    • Establish training tests and evaluation materials.
    • Maintain and ensure that review exercises are relevant; and are measured by the retention of information by the class participants.
    • Develop plans to ensure that the course materials result in meeting the training objectives.
    • Review applicable training materials to stay abreast of current technology and methods for meeting training needs in a cost-effective manner.
    • Design, develop and conduct training programs and presentations in connection with PJM business and product developments.
    • Trainers will participate in one or more of the following areas:
    • General Training Support - Delivering training programs on markets, operations, business rules, system conditions or events, internet tool applications and other topics as required. Both in person and asynchronous training may be conducted. Programs may be cyclical or as required to support the education needs. The team may also be called upon to support other programs.
    • PJM System Operator Training Programs – The team creates curriculum and delivers programs targeted to PJM system operators based on changing system requirements, market, ancillary services or business rule changes, or procedural changes. The team works with the Manager of Dispatch to ensure integration with the needs of the system operators. Increasing emphasis is being placed on new technology for capture and delivery of training asynchronously to better fit the needs of shift personnel.
    • PJM Operator Training Simulator Training Programs – The team creates training scenarios and delivers programs targeted to PJM system operators based on preparedness for possible events or reactive training based on new operations experiences. The simulator is also used for position certification prior to advancement and for peer group national and international programs. Ensuring consistency of the simulator with the real time system and environment is also the responsibility of the team.
    • Emergency Conditions Support –The team supports emergency preparedness and business continuity drills, exercises and activities.
    • NERC, RFC and Industry Group Support – The team members represent PJM and actively participate in the stakeholder process for NERC, EPRI, NATF, IEEE, and other PJM stakeholder groups.

    Characteristics and Qualifications

    Required

    • BS degree in Engineering or at least 5 years of experience relevent work experience
    • Experience using effective verbal and written communications skills
    • Ability to provide classroom instruction, which includes the development, design and continual assessment of lesson plans
    • Ability to deliver and facilitate training


    Preferred

    • MBA, Business
    • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
