Through this 36-month program, participants experience technically challenging, hands-on nine month rotations in the three core functions of PJM – System Operations, System Planning, and Markets - as well as shorter rotations in many support functions including Member Relations, Security, Information Technology, Compliance, Finance, Legal, Human Resources, and Regulatory. This program is designed to build a fundamental understanding of the operation of the power grid from a real-time, system operations perspective, a thorough knowledge of how the wholesale markets operate, and a critical knowledge of the long-term infrastructure planning process.
In the System Operations rotation, participants gain hands-on experience with PJM’s energy management system (EMS) and other tools needed to model, analyze, and operate the world’s largest centrally-dispatched power system on a real-time basis assuring its reliability and safety.
Through the System Planning rotation, participants learn how to perform transmission expansion analysis in support of all aspects of the development of the Regional Transmission Expansion Plan including baseline, generator interconnection, and interregional analysis. The Regional Transmission Expansion Plan integrates baseline reliability analyses with market efficiency and interconnection analysis to identify bulk transmission system expansion or enhancement options.
During the Markets rotation, participants learn how to operate and support each of the following markets on a daily basis: Spinning Reserve, Regulation, Day Ahead, Financial Transmission Rights (FTR), and Capacity. Additionally, participants learn how to monitor PJM Real Time LMP calculations and review prices for accuracy prior to posting.
Rotational assignments in Member Relations, Security, Information Technology, Compliance, Finance, Legal, Human Resources, and Regulatory will give participants a broader understanding of the business of PJM and continue to build business and leadership skills.
