  • General Position Summary

    Reporting to the Director, Total Rewards the position is responsible for the retirement plans including design, administration, and coordination. The (Sr.) Benefits Specialist shall conduct business in terms of the benefits plans and contracts in a manner that is legally compliant.

    The (Sr.) Benefits Specialist will have significant input into the design and implementation of PJM’s defined benefit and defined contribution plan administration, post retirement plan administration, disclosure, and will coordinate with external auditors of these plans, review financial statements and complete the plans’ 5500s for governmental compliance.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Fulfill role of a senior professional in benefits administration and benefits modeling.
    • Research and analyze developments in benefits law and model financial scenarios.
    • Prepare analysis data for actuarial assessments and surveys and participate in review of the data.
    • Complete the Company’s Form 5500s.
    • Prepare communications materials to maintain compliance with IRS, DOL etc.
    • Interpret benefit plan provisions.
    • Design, develop, implement and evaluate effective retirement benefits plans to ensure that PJM has the ability to attract and retain candidates and facilitate the overall benefits process.
    • Coordinate and design the annual benefits statement issued to employees, including coordination of data from pension actuaries, 401(k) providers and health care carriers.
    • Serve as the secretary to the Benefits Administration Committee, responsible for the meeting agenda, minutes, and administration associated with the Plan’s fiduciaries.
    • Develop and implement programs, policies, procedures and controls regarding PJM’s benefit plans.
    • Ensure plan compliance with governmental guidelines and timeframes.
    • Act as the liaison with the external benefits vendors and brokers.
    • Act as the liaison to external auditors including the annual financial audit and any governmental audits
    • Research and analyze developments and possess a keen awareness of new legislation affecting benefits plans (FMLA, COBRA, HIPAA, ADA, ERISA).
    • Administer the Company's 401(k) plan, pension plan and retiree health plan.
    • Meet with, educate and guide employees who are considering retirement.
    • Complete non-discrimination testing for the 401(k) plan and flexible spending plan.
    • Remain fully knowledgeable of all tax codes and tax laws affecting benefit plans and affect on individual’s pay.
    • Assist with annual benefits open enrollment period.
    • Administer the FMLA/leave/disability program.
    • Administer the adoption, Sittercity, EAP, workers compensation and Retirewise plans.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Characteristics and Qualifications


    • BS degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or equivalent work experience
    • At least 5 years of experience direct Benefits Administration experience
    • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
    • Ability to visualize and solve complex problems
    • Experience using effective verbal and written communications skills
    • Experience with HR processes and data
    • Experience with HR rules and regulations regarding sensitive information and its dissemination
    • Experience with the following computer programs – Excel, Word, Power Point, SAP, HRIS.
