  • General Position Summary

    The (Sr./Lead) Solutions Engineer position provides support for the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools used for transmission State Estimation (SE), Contingency Analysis among other advanced apps as part of the PJM Energy Management System (EMS). This includes participation in the coordination, design, requirement documentation, testing, training, implementation and ongoing maintenance of the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools in addition to the infrastructure used to transfer calculated results to other Operations, Markets, etc downstream systems via Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). This role may also include participation in an on-call rotation for off-hour support of the tool suite.
    Additionally the engineer may also participate in the bulk transmission model quarterly update process used to keep the PJM EMS model up to date with the Bulk Transmission Model in support of the PJM RTO footprint.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Serving as a Subject Matter Expert and overall user support for department and other staff using the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools
    • Support the specification, design, development and testing of enhancements to the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools including the State Estimator (SE), Contingency Analysis among other advanced apps
    • Coordination with PJM vendors responsible for development and support of the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools
    • Creation and maintenance of process and procedure documentation for users of the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools
    • Design of scripts used to query and bulk update data within the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools for PJM Operations, Markets, and Transmission Planning purposes
    • Support the specification, design, development and testing of the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Activation automation used to transfer PJM EMS Advanced Apps resultant data to downstream PJM Operations, Markets, etc system including interaction with EMS vendors to complete implementation and testing
    • Support of ongoing infrastructure and other maintenance activities associated with the PJM EMS Advanced Apps suite of tools

    Characteristics and Qualifications

    Required

    • BS degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent work experience
    • At least 4 years of experience with either Nodal, Commercial or Planning Bulk Power Transmission modelling in all phases of software development (i.e. design, testing and implementation) for IT projects
    • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
    • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
    • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
    • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support


    Preferred

    • MS, Engineering
    • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
    • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
    • Experience with power flow applications such as PSS/E, PSS-MUST, TARA, PAAC, EMS or equivalent
    • Experience using and maintaining Energy Management Systems Experience in implementation of EMS large scale software tools Experience evaluating technologies, benefits, risks and costs in order to make technology decisions and addresses technical issues as they arise
